Turkey to Upgrade Transport Network to Boost Trade by 2026
Turkey is set to modernize its transport infrastructure to achieve new trade milestones by 2026. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance the country’s rail, road, and maritime networks, alongside digital and postal services.
The program aims to expand mobile coverage to 3,905 settlements and provide postal services to 37,826 locations, ensuring better connectivity for all regions. Research and development in domestic transport, maritime, and e-communication technologies will also be intensified, supporting up to 60 new projects.
Railway Upgrades
On the rail front, the plan focuses on safe, efficient, and eco-friendly travel:
- Total railway length will reach 14,437 km (8,971 mi), with 281 km of modernized tracks.
- High-speed rail lines will extend 2,769 km (1,720 mi), and 55% of lines will be electrified.
- Urban rail systems will cover 487 km (303 mi) across 260 stations, with 65% of lines equipped with advanced signaling.
Maritime Transport
Maritime transport will see growth in Ro-Ro vehicles, container throughput, and cruise traffic, while the new Rize İyidere logistics port is scheduled for completion this year. Combined transport solutions linking ports and railways will further boost efficiency, supporting sustainable and competitive trade.
Air Transport Upgrades
Air transport infrastructure will also be upgraded, with increased airport capacity, more international routes, and a projected 4.8% growth in cargo traffic.
With these measures, Turkey aims to create a modern, integrated, and sustainable transport network, reinforcing its position as a regional trade hub.
