Turkey Clarifies Residence Permit Fees and Validity Rules
🇹🇷🪪 Turkey’s Interior Ministry Denies Rumors About Additional Residence Permit Fees
The Turkish Ministry of Interior has officially denied reports claiming that foreigners must pay additional fees to speed up the residence permit (ikamet) application process.
According to Interior Ministry official Mustafa Çiftçi, there are no extra payments, unofficial charges, or expedited processing fees for residence permit applications.
The official residence permit application fee in 2026 is 964 Turkish lira.
“There are no other payments required when submitting a residence permit application,” Çiftçi emphasized.
How Long Can a Residence Permit Be Issued For?
The Ministry also reminded applicants that the validity period of a residence permit depends on its category and several objective factors.
- Short-term residence permit — up to 2 years.
- Family residence permit — up to 3 years.
- Student residence permit — for the duration of studies.
The final validity period may also depend on:
- the validity period of the applicant’s passport;
- the validity period of health insurance coverage;
- the purpose of stay in Turkey;
- other conditions established by Turkish legislation.
Applicants are advised to rely only on official information and avoid unofficial services promising accelerated residence permit approval.
More Than 1.2 Million Foreigners Hold Residence Permits in Turkey
As of May 21, 2026, more than 1.2 million foreign nationals were living in Turkey with valid residence permits.
The largest numbers of residence permit holders are citizens of:
- 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan — 188,000
- 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan — 96,000
- 🇸🇾 Syria — 83,000
The Ministry stressed that residence permit decisions are based on legal requirements and documentation, not on additional payments or expedited service requests.
