Turkey Launches New Motorcycle Safety Action Plan
Turkey to Strengthen Motorcycle Safety Enforcement in 2026–2027
Turkey's Ministry of Interior has announced a new Motorcycle Safety Action Plan for 2026–2027 aimed at reducing road accidents involving motorcycles. The initiative comes in response to official statistics showing that nearly one in every two traffic accidents involving injuries or fatalities includes a motorcycle.
The new measures will increase traffic enforcement and introduce additional safety initiatives for motorcyclists across Turkey.
What Will Change for Motorcyclists
The nationwide action plan includes several new measures designed to improve road safety.
- Special motorcycle waiting areas will be introduced at busy signalized intersections to improve visibility before traffic lights change.
- Traffic police will increase roadside inspections throughout the country.
- Motorcycle delivery riders will face additional safety inspections due to their high daily mileage in urban traffic.
- Educational programs, training sessions, and public awareness campaigns on safe motorcycle riding will be expanded nationwide.
The government aims to combine stricter enforcement with education to reduce motorcycle-related accidents.
Traffic Violations Under Increased Scrutiny
Police will pay particular attention to the following violations:
- Speeding.
- Running red lights.
- Riding without a protective helmet.
- Driving in the oncoming traffic lane.
- Other dangerous traffic violations.
Authorities also plan to increase the number of roadside checks across Turkey.
Accident Statistics Raise Concerns
According to the Ministry of Interior, between January 1 and July 8, 2026, Turkey recorded 138,833 traffic accidents involving injuries or fatalities.
Motorcycles were involved in 69,131 accidents, representing nearly half of all serious road accidents during the period.
Goal of the New Action Plan
The Motorcycle Safety Action Plan for 2026–2027 is designed to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents, improve rider discipline, and make Turkish roads safer for all road users.
The strategy combines stricter traffic enforcement, public education, infrastructure improvements, and preventive safety measures to reduce road fatalities and injuries involving motorcycles.
