Turkey Launches Monitoring of Lawyers on Social Media
Turkey to Monitor Lawyers’ Social Media Activity
A new regulatory step has been introduced in Türkiye as legal authorities tighten control over how lawyers present themselves on social media platforms.
The Union of Turkish Bar Associations has established a dedicated unit to monitor online activity of lawyers, focusing on potential violations of the advertising ban in the legal profession.
New Monitoring Unit Established
The newly created “Center for Monitoring Violations of the Advertising Ban” consists of five members and will be responsible for overseeing lawyers’ digital presence.
Its main tasks include tracking posts on social media, reviewing text, images, videos, and audio content, identifying possible violations, and preparing reports in cooperation with local bar associations.
Why the Measure Was Introduced
The decision comes amid a growing number of lawyers promoting their services online, which is considered a violation of existing rules prohibiting advertising in the legal profession.
Authorities emphasize that legal services must not be marketed directly or indirectly through social media content.
Key Restrictions for Lawyers
Updated regulations reaffirm strict limits on how lawyers can present themselves publicly.
- Lawyers are prohibited from promoting their cases in an advertising format.
- Public appearances must not be used as indirect self-promotion.
- Content about income, lifestyle, or professional success is restricted if it can be interpreted as advertising.
Professional Ethics Emphasized
The regulations also stress that lawyers must avoid any behavior that could harm the reputation of the legal profession, especially when they are publicly identifiable as attorneys.
The move reflects broader efforts to regulate professional conduct in digital spaces and maintain ethical standards within the legal system.
