Turkey changes petrol and LPG tax
Turkey changes fuel tax on petrol and LPG from October 1
From October 1, 2026, new rules for Turkey's Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) on fuel came into effect. At the same time, the previous sliding-scale system, which was used to reduce the impact of global oil prices and currency fluctuations on fuel costs, ended.
The decision was published in the Official Gazette. According to Anadolu Agency, the new system introduces a gradual increase in ÖTV on petrol throughout October, November and December instead of a one-time tax increase.
How the petrol ÖTV will change
For unleaded 95-octane petrol, the new ÖTV rate will increase in stages:
- October: 7.9000 TL per litre.
- From November 1: 11.3600 TL per litre.
- From December 1: 14.8277 TL per litre.
Without a transition period, the end of the previous system could have increased the petrol ÖTV by around 10.39 TL per litre, potentially pushing retail petrol prices up by approximately 12.47 TL per litre.
Instead of a one-time increase of around 12.47 TL, the additional tax burden has been spread over several months.
Petrol expected to rise by around 4.15 TL from October 1
As a result of the first stage of the tax adjustment, petrol prices at filling stations are expected to increase by approximately 4.15 TL per litre from October 1.
This means the October increase will be significantly smaller than the potential one-time rise of 12.47 TL. Further changes to the tax rate are scheduled for November and December.
The October petrol price increase is only the first stage. Further ÖTV changes are scheduled for November 1 and December 1.
What is changing for LPG?
For liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the pricing system has returned to the model used before the sliding-scale mechanism was introduced.
The ÖTV on LPG, previously set at 9.2190 TL per kilogram, has increased to 11.3830 TL per kilogram.
As a result of the tax adjustment, LPG prices at filling stations are expected to increase by approximately 1.48 TL.
Fuel prices in Turkey
The fuel prices cited in the report are as follows:
Istanbul, European side
- Petrol: 84.50 TL
- Diesel: 97.10 TL
- LPG: 36.44 TL
Istanbul, Asian side
- Petrol: 84.40 TL
- Diesel: 96.90 TL
- LPG: 35.85 TL
Ankara
- Petrol: 85.50 TL
- Diesel: 98.20 TL
- LPG: 36.54 TL
Izmir
- Petrol: 85.80 TL
- Diesel: 98.50 TL
- LPG: 36.44 TL
What does this mean for motorists?
The new system provides for a gradual return of the petrol ÖTV to 14.8277 TL per litre. The next stage is scheduled for November 1, while the final rate under the announced schedule should take effect from December 1.
Therefore, the October change is not the final petrol price adjustment. The tax burden is expected to increase further in November and December.
Fuel prices affect more than just motorists. Petrol, diesel and LPG costs influence transportation, logistics and the overall cost of goods and services. This is particularly relevant for residents and car owners in popular regions such as Alanya.
