Turkey Imposes Heavy Fines for Abandoning Dogs
Fines of 86,358 TRY Imposed in Turkey for Abandoning Dogs
In the Turkish province of Kütahya, authorities have implemented strict measures against pet owners who abandoned their dogs on the streets. During official inspections, it was discovered that some animals taken to shelters as strays actually had identifiable owners.
According to the Association for the Protection of Stray Animals, out of 60 dogs collected from the streets and placed in shelters, the owners of these animals were successfully identified. As a result, each owner was fined 86,358 Turkish lira per dog under the Animal Protection Law.
Officials also reported cases where some owners retrieved their dogs from shelters, allegedly to save them, but later abandoned them again on the streets. These actions were classified as violations of animal welfare regulations and treated as repeat offenses.
Authorities emphasize that the main goal of these measures is to prevent irresponsible pet ownership and reduce the number of stray dogs in urban areas.
Under current Turkish legislation, such violations are now considered serious administrative offenses. Enforcement and regional monitoring have been significantly strengthened to ensure compliance with animal protection laws.
