🇹🇷 Turkey Officially Bans Foods Made from Insects and Pork
The Ministry of Agriculture has introduced new strict regulations in Turkey concerning so-called “novel foods”.
Under the new rules, products made from insects or pork will no longer be able to receive approval for sale on the Turkish market.
Foods produced using insects or pork are now officially prohibited from entering the Turkish food supply chain.
What Products Fall Under Enhanced Control
In addition to the ban on insect- and pork-based foods, the Ministry will apply increased scrutiny to a wide range of modern food technologies.
- Lab-created foods
- Cell-culture foods
- Products containing nanomaterials
- New molecular foods
- Substances derived from algae, fungi, and microorganisms
These categories are considered part of the rapidly developing “novel food” sector and will now be subject to a separate scientific evaluation process.
Multi-Stage Scientific Review Up to 9 Months
Every new product classified under these categories must now pass a multi-stage scientific assessment before it can be approved for sale in Turkey.
The examination process may last up to nine months and involves detailed health and safety analysis by scientific experts.
Possible Full Market Ban
If experts identify any potential risk to human health during the evaluation process, the product will be completely banned from sale in Turkey.
If scientists determine that a product poses even a potential health risk, it will not be allowed to enter the Turkish market under any circumstances.
These measures are aimed at strengthening food safety standards and ensuring stricter control over emerging food technologies in the country.
