Super El Niño Could Increase Heatwaves in Turkey
Super El Niño May Intensify Heatwaves and Extreme Weather in Turkey
Experts in Turkey are warning that a potential “Super El Niño” event could significantly increase extreme weather conditions across the country. The statement was made by Professor Şermin Tağıl from the Geography Department at İzmir Bakırçay University.
According to the expert, autumn 2026 and the entire year of 2027 may be noticeably hotter than seasonal climate averages, with more frequent and severe weather events.
“We expect the autumn seasons of 2026–2027 to be hotter than normal, and these temperatures will be accompanied by extreme weather events,” said Professor Şermin Tağıl.
What Is El Niño?
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon caused by a significant warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
This warming disrupts atmospheric circulation, wind patterns, and rainfall distribution, affecting weather conditions globally.
Although El Niño does not directly impact Turkey, it can indirectly influence regional climate systems.
Expected Climate Risks for Turkey
According to forecasts, the coming years may bring:
- extreme heatwaves
- prolonged droughts
- increased risk of wildfires
- heavy rainfall events
- strong sea storms
The highest risk levels are expected in the Aegean region.
Storms and Heavy Rainfall Possible
Professor Tağıl also noted that by late summer, overheated waters in the Mediterranean and Black Sea could interact with cold northern air masses.
This may create conditions for powerful storms, heavy rainfall, and dangerous weather systems in the eastern Mediterranean region.
Experts are calling for stronger preparedness measures, including water resource management, wildfire prevention, and climate risk planning.
