Oba Officially Discontinues Funeral Meal Tradition
In Oba, the tradition of funeral meals has been discontinued
In one of the largest districts of Alanya — Oba — the long-standing practice of organizing communal funeral meals has been officially ended. The decision was made collectively by residents after nearly a year of discussions and consultations.
The dialogue was initiated by neighborhood head Şeref Gürkan, who noted that many families had raised concerns about the financial and emotional strain such meals created during a time of grief.
This change is intended to ease both the financial burden and the emotional pressure on families during funeral ceremonies.
The new approach is already in effect. Recent funeral ceremonies in the district were held without the traditional communal meals.
Residents have supported the change, emphasizing that it allows families to focus on saying goodbye to their loved ones without additional obligations or social pressure.
The decision reflects a broader shift toward simplifying social customs that may unintentionally create stress for grieving families.
