Istanbul Introduces Digital Taxi System Inspired by Singapore
Istanbul to Launch Unified Digital Taxi System Inspired by Singapore 🚕
Istanbul is preparing a major transformation of its taxi network with the introduction of a unified digital system based on Singapore’s transport model, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce empty rides across the city.
The reform will integrate all taxis into a single digital platform, connecting them through mobile applications and coordinated taxi stands. This system will allow vehicles to operate as part of a real-time network rather than functioning independently.
📊 Current efficiency challenges
According to Ismet Dalci, head of the Chamber of Taxi Drivers, taxi efficiency in Istanbul currently stands at around 48%. This means that more than half of taxi mileage is driven without passengers.
Increasing efficiency to 90% could deliver the equivalent impact of adding more than 8,500 taxis to the city — without increasing the actual number of vehicles.
🔄 How the new system will work
- Taxis will be fully integrated into a single digital network
- Mobile applications will coordinate ride distribution in real time
- Taxi stands will be connected to the system
- After dropping off passengers, drivers will receive new assignments or directions to the nearest stand
🌍 Inspired by Singapore
The model is based on Singapore’s centralized transport system, which is known for balancing supply and demand in real time, minimizing unnecessary mileage, and improving urban transport efficiency.
“The goal is not to expand the fleet, but to optimize the use of existing resources in a more sustainable way.”
By adopting this approach, Istanbul aims to modernize its taxi infrastructure and improve transportation flow in one of the world’s most congested cities.
