Halki Theological School on Heybeliada May Reopen in September 2026
The historic Halki Theological School, located on Heybeliada Island in the Sea of Marmara, may resume operations in September 2026 following an extensive restoration process. The announcement was made by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I during a speech in Athens.
Preparations for the reopening are in the final stage, and the event is expected to take place in a ceremonial atmosphere.
A Historic Religious Institution Closed Since 1971
Founded in 1844 to educate Orthodox clergy, the school was once one of the most important theological institutions in the Orthodox world.
In 1971, the school ceased operations after a ruling by Türkiye’s Constitutional Court that placed private higher education institutions under state control.
International Attention Around the Reopening
The status of the Halki Theological School has remained a topic of discussion for decades both within Türkiye and internationally.
In recent years, the issue has been raised during diplomatic talks involving Türkiye, Greece, and the United States.
“The reopening is being prepared with great care, and we hope to celebrate this event in a dignified and ceremonial way,” Bartholomew I said.
The potential reopening in 2026 could become a landmark event for the Orthodox community and an important step in preserving religious heritage and theological education.
