Gold Overtakes Real Estate Among Turkish Households

Gold Overtakes Real Estate Among Turkish Households

Gold Instead of Concrete: Where Are Turkish Households Keeping Their Savings?

The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye has published the results of a recent survey involving 3,335 households. The findings show that people in Türkiye are increasingly turning to precious metals as a way to preserve their savings, while interest in real estate is gradually declining.

What Are Turkish Households Ready to Invest In?

According to the survey, gold has become more attractive than real estate among a significant share of Turkish households.

  • Gold — 41.3%. The precious metal remains the leading defensive asset, with interest increasing by 1% compared with the previous month.
  • Real estate — 37.1%. Interest in purchasing apartments, commercial property and land fell by 1.4% compared with the previous month.

Important: The difference between gold and real estate remains relatively small, but the trend points to a shift in the investment preferences of Turkish households.

What Do People Expect From the Economy in 12 Months?

The survey also showed what economic indicators people in Türkiye expect over the next year.

  • Inflation — 45.58%.
  • US dollar exchange rate — 54.47 Turkish lira.
  • Housing price growth — 32.13%.

At the same time, rising prices for food, fuel and utilities are among the biggest concerns for households.

Why Does Gold Remain Popular?

High inflation expectations are encouraging households to look for assets that can help protect their savings from the loss of purchasing power. Against this backdrop, gold remains one of the most familiar ways for people in Türkiye to preserve their wealth.

With inflation expectations remaining high, traditional gold bars and coins remain a more familiar and accessible way for many people in Türkiye to preserve their savings than investing in real estate.

Gold or Real Estate: What Are Turkish Households Choosing?

The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye survey shows that real estate remains one of the key investment options, but gold is gradually strengthening its position.

Real estate requires a higher entry budget and involves transaction procedures and additional costs, while gold can be purchased in smaller amounts and, when necessary, sold relatively quickly.

Key takeaway: Against the backdrop of high inflation expectations, gold currently ranks slightly ahead of real estate in terms of attractiveness among the surveyed Turkish households.
