Global Tourism Expected to Shift Significantly in 2026
Experts Expect Major Shifts in Global Tourism Trends in 2026 Amid Middle East Tensions
Against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East, tourism experts are forecasting significant changes in global travel patterns in 2026.
The head of the Antalya City Council Tourism Working Group, Recep Yavuz, stated that security concerns may push some high-income travelers to reconsider traditional long-haul destinations and transit routes.
Changing Travel Preferences
According to Yavuz, tourists are increasingly focusing not only on their destination, but also on the safety of transit flights and air corridors.
Routes through major hubs such as Dubai and Doha are now being reassessed by some travelers due to perceived security risks.
He also noted that interest in safety verification before travel has increased across Europe, especially among high-budget tourists.
Impact on Global Tourism Flows
Yavuz highlighted that approximately 660,000 German tourists travel annually to destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
He added that other long-haul destinations, including Qatar, South Africa, and Namibia, may also experience pressure due to shifting travel preferences.
Overall, this could affect up to 50 million high-spending travelers worldwide, according to estimates.
Turkey Positioned as a Beneficiary
In this changing environment, Turkey is seen as one of the destinations that could benefit from redirected tourist flows.
Key locations such as Istanbul, Bodrum, and the Aegean and Mediterranean coastal regions are expected to attract increased interest.
Experts emphasize that in 2026, safety perception—not price—will become the primary factor in travel decisions.
