Legal Adviser Says Erdoğan Can Run Again in 2028

Legal Adviser Says Erdoğan Can Run Again in 2028

🗳️ Erdoğan Could Run for President Again in 2028, Adviser Says

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could be eligible to run for another presidential term if the next general election is held in April 2028, according to his chief legal adviser, Mehmet Uçum.

ℹ️ Uçum stated that holding the election on 16 April 2028 would allow Erdoğan to seek another term under the provisions of Türkiye's Constitution.

📅 Why April 2028 Matters

Under the current election schedule, Türkiye's next general election is expected to take place on 7 May 2028. However, Uçum said Parliament could decide between 9 and 15 February 2028 to renew the elections and move the vote forward to 16 April.

According to the adviser, such a decision would not be considered an ordinary early election in political terms but rather a constitutional renewal of elections.

⚖️ Constitutional Basis

Uçum explained that the Turkish Constitution allows a president to run for another term if Parliament decides to renew elections before the completion of the current presidential mandate.

📌 The final decision on changing the election date would require approval by the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

🇹🇷 Erdoğan's Presidency

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was first elected President of Türkiye in 2014. Following the constitutional amendments approved in 2017, the country adopted a presidential system, and Erdoğan was subsequently elected under the new system in 2018 and 2023.

The legal interpretation presented by the president's adviser suggests that a parliamentary decision to renew elections before the end of the current term could make another presidential candidacy constitutionally possible.
