Number of Electric Cars in Türkiye Rises 53% in a Year

Electric Car Numbers in Türkiye Rise by 53%

The number of registered electric passenger cars in Türkiye reached 472,157 by the end of August 2026, marking a 53.2% increase compared with August 2025, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).

Electric cars now account for 2.62% of Türkiye's registered passenger car fleet, which stood at around 18.04 million vehicles in August.

The growth is part of a longer-term expansion of electric mobility in Türkiye. The number of registered electric cars increased from just 565 in 2015 to 183,776 at the end of 2024 and 370,591 at the end of 2025.

Hybrid Vehicles Are Growing Too

Hybrid vehicles have also become an increasingly important part of Türkiye's passenger car fleet.

By August 2026, the number of registered hybrid cars had reached 896,270, compared with 697,027 at the end of 2025 and 391,296 at the end of 2024.

Hybrids represented 4.97% of the registered passenger car fleet, up from 4% at the end of 2025.

Together, registered electric and hybrid cars numbered approximately 1.37 million by the end of August, representing roughly 7.6% of Türkiye's passenger car fleet.

What Is Driving the Growth?

The expansion of charging infrastructure is one factor supporting the growth of electric vehicles in Türkiye. Charging demand has also increased significantly: in July 2026, electric vehicle charging stations recorded approximately 89,947 MWh of electricity consumption, the highest monthly level recorded at that time. Around 3.33 million charging sessions were carried out during the month.

Consumer preferences, the introduction of new electric models and the growing market share of Türkiye's domestic automotive brand Togg have also contributed to the expansion of the EV market.

Electric and Hybrid Cars Gain Share of New Sales

The shift is also visible in new car sales, not only in the existing vehicle fleet.

In January–July 2026, electric and hybrid passenger cars accounted for 51.7% of total passenger car sales, with 259,970 vehicles sold. Fully electric cars accounted for 93,403 sales during the period, while hybrid sales reached 165,924.

More recent January–August figures show that 105,951 electric cars and 187,045 hybrid cars were sold during the first eight months of 2026. Their respective shares of new passenger car sales were 18.8% and 33.1%.

Türkiye's Electric Mobility Market

The growing number of electric and hybrid vehicles is changing Türkiye's automotive market. Alongside increasing registrations, the country is seeing greater demand for charging infrastructure and a wider selection of electric and hybrid models.

At a glance: Türkiye had 472,157 registered electric cars and 896,270 hybrid cars by August 2026. Together, they represented around 7.6% of the country's registered passenger car fleet.

The latest figures suggest that electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming an increasingly visible part of both Türkiye's existing vehicle fleet and its new-car market.
