Turkey Builds Naval Ships for Portugal: NATO Defense Deal

🇹🇷 Türkiye Begins Construction of First Military Ship for Portuguese Navy

Türkiye has officially launched the construction of the first naval logistics vessel for the Portuguese Navy, marking a significant step in defense cooperation between the two NATO allies.

The steel-cutting ceremony took place on Nov. 16 at Ada Shipyard in Istanbul. Haluk Görgün, head of Türkiye's Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), described the event as a "strategic milestone" and a symbol of strengthening ties with Portugal.

The project follows the contract signed in Lisbon on Dec. 17, 2024, covering the construction of two Auxiliary Oiler Replenisher and Logistics Ships. It represents the first export of a Turkish-built military naval platform to an EU and NATO member state.

Advanced Capabilities

The new vessels will support a wide range of missions, including:

  • At-sea replenishment
  • Logistics and humanitarian operations
  • Medical support
  • Amphibious missions
  • Search and rescue tasks

With an economical speed of 14 knots and a range of up to 14,000 nautical miles, the ships are designed for long-distance, transoceanic missions. They will feature a flight deck and hangar for helicopters and UAVs and have the capacity to transport up to 20 light armored vehicles.

They will also be equipped with advanced communication, command-and-control systems, sensors, and defensive weapon systems.

"A New Chapter of Trust"

Rear Adm. Joao Marques da Costa, director of the Portuguese Navy Ship Program, said the milestone represents "a new chapter of trust and shared vision" between Türkiye and Portugal. He emphasized that the vessels will boost national and allied readiness for modern security challenges.
